Greta is trendy! No, not the divine Garbo but a 16 year old student from Sweden who showed the old business leaders at WEF where the (climate) hammer hangs! Since then, “courageous” pupils go to the city centre on Friday morning to demonstrate against climate change instead attending the double French lesson at school.
While the demonstrators arrived in the last century without helmets on old Vespas, the new generation comes politically correct on the e-bike. The coolest moments of the demo are captured with the latest generation of mobile phones. It is ignored that the mobile phones and e-bike batteries – which are replaced every few years – are made of rare metals and require a great deal of energy to be pitted in the Congo conflict area under inhuman conditions, and that their recycling is only possible with great (energy) effort.
In the last century the demonstrations ended with a Gauloise bleue and a Pastis in the shared flat with a loud played Janis Joplin record. Today the success messages are checked individually on the mobile phone and these are celebrated with a capsule coffee from the machine which one got for free with the purchase of 100 capsules.
Well, every generation has their own way to the pursuit of happiness – at the moment political correctness is obviously more important than sustainability.
Capsule coffee is personally unappealing to me. The concept of disposable machines and aluminium capsules contradicts my idea of dealing with resources. From a culinary point of view, the concept of producing food “at the touch of a button” is not my cup of tea.
In my search for alternatives, I started with portafilter Espresso machines. After I had fought my way through lengthy discussions in Internet formus whether the pump pressure should be 9.3 or 9.5 bar, the water temperature 93 or 95 degrees and the amount of coffee 6 or 8 grams, I noticed that I was not particularly interested in this. I didn’t want to complete a three-year additional training to Barrista, but only drink a coffee.
Finally I bought a fully automatic machine and am happy with it. In order to obtain a fine coffee, the only thing to do is to adjust the grind in a way that a 30 ml espresso takes about 25 seconds.
With the coffee beans, there is a huge choice and as with the wine, the choice of variety and roasting is ultimately a matter of taste and also depends on whether milk and/or sugar is added. As we drink less coffee than wine, we have not had any extensive tastings and usually buy the coffee from Chicco D’Oro, which in our view tastes best with or without milk and sugar.

Von der der göttlichen Greta, e-bikes aus dem Kongo und Kaffeekapseln
Greta ist in! Nein, nicht die göttliche Garbo sondern eine 16 jährige Schülerin aus Schweden, welche am WEF den alten Wirtschaftsführern gezeigt hat, wo der Klima-Hammer hängt. Seither gehen “mutige” Schüler am Freitagmorgen statt in die Doppelstunde Französisch in die Innenstadt, um dort gegen den Klimawandel zu demonstrieren.
Während die Demonstranten im letzten Jahrhundert ohne Helm auf alten Vespas angefahren kamen, kommt die neue Generation politisch korrekt auf dem e-bike. Die coolsten Momente der Demo werden mit Handys der neusten Generation festgehalten. Dabei wird geflissentlich ignoriert, dass die alle paar Jahre wechselnden Handys und e-bike Akkus aus seltenen Metallen mit grossem Energieaufwand im Konfliktgebiet Kongo unter unwürdigen Bedingungen geschürft werden und dass deren Recycling nur unter grossem (Energie-)aufwand möglich ist.
Im letzten Jahrhundert klangen die Demonstrationen bei einer Gauloise bleue und einem Pastis in der WG bei lauter Musik von Janis Joplin aus. Heute werden individuell die Erfolgsmeldungen auf dem Handy gecheckt und diese mit einem Kapselkaffee aus der Einweg-Maschine – die man beim Kauf von 100 Kapseln gratis dazu erhalten hat – begossen.
Nun, jede Generation soll nach ihrer Façon glücklich werden – derzeit ist offenbar politische Korrektheit wichtiger als Nachhaltigkeit.
Kapselkaffee ist mir persönlich unsympathisch. Das Konzept der Wegwerfmaschinen sowie der Alukapseln widerspricht meiner Vorstellung vom Umgang mit Resourcen. Vom kulinarischen Standpunkt her mag ich das Konzept des „auf einen Knopfdruck“ Herstellen von Lebensmitteln nicht.
Auf der Suche nach Alternativen landete ich zunächst bei den Siebträgermaschinen. Nachdem ich mich in Internetforen durch langwierige Diskussionen ob der Pumpdruck 9.3 oder 9.5 bar, die Wassertemperatur 93 oder 95 Grad und die Kaffeemenge 6 oder 8 Gramm betragen soll durchgekämpft hatte, stellte ich fest, dass mich dies nicht sonderlich interessierte. Ich wollte keine dreijährige Zusatzausbildung zum Barrista absolvieren, sondern bloss einen Kaffee trinken.
Schliesslich habe ich mir einen Vollautomat angeschafft und bin glücklich damit. Um einen feinen Kafffee zu erhalten muss lediglich der Mahlgrad so eingestellt werden, dass ein 30 ml Espresso in circa 25 Sekunden in der Tasse ist.
Bei den Kaffeebohnen gibt es eine riesige Auswahl und wie beim Wein ist die Wahl der Sorte und der Röstung letztlich Geschmackssache und hängt auch davon ab, ob man Milch und/oder Zucker dazu nimmt. Da wir weniger Kaffee als Wein trinken haben wir keine ausführlichen Degustationen durchgeführt und kaufen in der Regel den Kaffee von Chicco D’Oro, welcher uns mit oder ohne Milch und Zucker am besten mundet.
