What to do with flu? (English / German)

The third time flu this season !!! I can’t remember the last time I missed as many days at work as this winter.

Feverishly dizzy, dripping nose, pain in my throat and limbs. So I sit in the living room at 10 o’clock in the morning, while outside in the winter sun isolated joggers rush through, older women bring their full shopping bags home heavily snuffling and young women push their strollers while talking into their mobile phones.

A gruelling condition. Too awake to sleep, but too limp for any bigger activities. So what to do?

Study cookbooks? Somehow it’s no fun with a reduced sense of smell and taste and a pulsative head.

Read the newspaper? Well, Mr Trump’s capers have been quite entertaining at first. It was exciting to read how the world breathlessly observed that a politician not only remembered his election promises after the election, but actually put them into practice. But that’s where the positive ends. Meanwhile, the coverage about Trump reminds us of a car accident: You don’t want it to happen, but you gawk anyway; and after the tenth accident it’s somehow not that exciting anymore.

Bundling waste paper? Well, I don’t feel soooo healthy then either. One should rest and recover when you’re not going to work.

Testing alternative healing methods? As a resident of a city whose infrastructure is essentially financed by the taxes of the chemical industry, I have fulfilled my civic duty and bought pills against sore throats, nose drops, cough syrup, fever blister cream, lip balm and effervescent tablets. This should at least partly make up for the loss in gross national product caused by my absence from the office.

In keeping up with the zeitgeist, however, I also use purely natural products. For the local anaesthesia of mouth and throat as well as for the increase of the general well-being the following household remedies proved themselves, whose price/performance ratio is excellent:
– No 1 Rouge, Domaine Bort, Languedoc (Syrah/Grenache) at Leclerc for 10 Euro
– Torridoro, Angelo Rocca, Sicily (Cabernet/Merlot), Coop for CHF 13.50
– Minervois, Pike & Bannier, (Syrah/Grenache), Ullrich for CHF 16.

If the throat already tolerates something cooler, I recommend
– La Terrasse, Robert Cantin, Quincy (Sauvignon Blanc), LeClerc for 9 Euro
– Sauvignon Blanc, Winzergenossenschaft Hügelheim, Hieber for 7 Euro

Sort stamps? Very good idea ! Some time ago I started again to put my older stamps into a pre-printed Schaubeck youth album “Europa”, which covers the epoch from 1850 to 1955. I became aware of how many kingdoms, dukedoms, free cities and free states etc. still existed a hundred years ago, which today are profane EU members. The same applies to the Heller, Groschen, Schilling, Lira, Kronen, Drachmen, Kunas etc. which are now mutated to simple Euros.

I also noticed how many countries had changed their form of government every few decades during this epoch. In this light one must probably relativize the current lamentations about Brexit, Trump’s foreign policy or Swiss referendums, which are said to be in contradiction to existing international treaties. Even if it seems so to us at the moment, the EU, globalised trade and multilateralism do not have to be the climax of development. The commentators who claim that their rejection inevitably means a step back to protectionism and ruin might be wrong. As European history shows, after a few years most concepts have been replaced by new ones, but rarely an earlier one has been used. So are we curious to see what better and more beautiful things will come.

Dispose of used glass? Well, I don’t feel soooo healthy then either. After all, you should take it easy and relax if you’re not going to work.

Read books?  It is not without pride that I can report that within a few months I have brought my school French back to a level where I can read French novels fluently and with pleasure. Only every 30 pages I consult my worn out yellow-blue Langenscheidt. I have discovered the French author Guillaume Musso, who is apparently the most successful at the moment but was wholly unknown to me before, and whom I can warmly recommend. He writes thrilling thrillers, which, however, are completely different from book to book, both thematically and formally. Not to be compared with Grishams lawyer stories or Mankell crime novel, where I usually only notice after 200 pages that I have read it a few years ago. Also not as confusing as the John Le Carré novels, where I typically loose sight over the many appearing people and plots from page 7 on, i.e. which double agent works in fact and truth for a third power or pursues his own hidden agenda. From Musso I can recommend L’appel de l’ange, Central Park and L’instant présent, all of which are of course also available in German and some of which have even been filmed.

Sort records? According to Philip Maloney’s motto: “I did what I always do in such situations”, I naturally rearranged my soon to be thousand vinyl LPs during the flu season. As the leading actor in Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity already stated, there are more ways to do this than you can imagine: alphabetically, chronologically, by country, by category. But sorting by food is also fun: Gianna Nannini’s Tutto live with pizza and pasta, Tote Hosens Bis zum bitteren Ende with Weisswurst and beer, Bob Marley’s Exodus with Poulet créolienne or Smiths Louder than bombs with some Guinness.

In the hope that this was now the last flu I remain with dear greetings, Adrian

Was tun bei Grippe?

Also was tun?

Altglas entsorgen?

Platten sortieren?
