GERMAN TEXT AFTER THE ENGLISH VERSION

When I am bored – e.g. because it is snowing on a Saturday in May – I sort my record collection. Readers of Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity know that you can do this in countless ways. This weekend I sorted the LPs and Singles released in 1969 in chronological order and created a spotify playlist that you can find here and which contains the songs listed in brackets after the respective sections below.

On January 12 Led Zeppelin released their debut album. The name of the band came from a saying of the Who drummer Keith Moon according which a band with Jimmy Page would crash like a leaded Zeppelin. The album cover consequently showed the crash of Zeppelin LZ 129 in Lakehurst in 1937. (Good times, bad times / Dazed and confused)

On January 17 the Beatles released the soundrack of their cartoon movie Yellow Submarine. On January 30 the Beatles gave their last concert on the roof of their record company in London (see a video of the Rooftop concert here ). (Yellow Submarine / All you need is love)

On March 7 the first record of Genesis titled ” From Genesis to revelation” was published. It was recorded in 10 days during the summer holidays of 1968 as the band members were still school-age. Because of its name, the album was mistakenly listed in record stores as “religious music”, so only about 600 copies were sold (When the sour turns to sweet / The serpent).

On April 7 the Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen released his second album “Songs from a room”. It includes the song “Bird on a wire”, which was the opener of all his concerts from that date. (Bird on a wire / Tonight will be fine).

On April 9 Bob Dylan’s album “Nashville skyline” was released. After Dylan became known as a folk singer at the beginning of his career, many fans struggled with his change to a rock musician. At the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 Pete Seeger wanted to cut the power cable with an axe to stop Dylan’s appearance. After his motorcycle accident at Woodstock on July 29 1966, he retired from public life. After his return he released a country album named “John Wesley Harding” in 1967. The record “Nashville Skyline” was also a pure country album, which was released in close collaboration with Johnny Cash (Lay Lady lay / Nashville Skyline Rag).

In April, two singles of well-known musicians were released: Elvis Presley’s “In the ghetto” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”. (In the Ghetto / The Boxer)

On May 23 The Who released their great rock opera “Tommy” which will later be published as a movie and performed as a musical and ballet. The deaf, blind and mute kid Tommy Walker becomes a Flipper World Champion, gets healed and celebrated by the masses only to be dropped by his followers again. (Ouverture / Pinball Wizard)

On June 27, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin released the single “je t’aime … moi non plus”, which led to a scandal because conservative circles found the title too offensive. The Vatican protested and excommunicated the Italian sales manager of the record company. (Je t’aime … moi non plus)

On June 21 the third album of the British rock band Deep Purple was released. It was the last in the original formation (Mk. I) and included a 12 minute three-part concert about the month of April. The album cover was the “the musical hell” by Hieronymus Bosch, in which a portrait of the Deep Purple musicians was incorporated (April).

David Bowie wrote “Space Oddity” after he saw Stanley Kubrick’s “2001 – a space odissey” in 1968. The single was released on July 11, nine days before the moon landing of Appollo 11. However the BBC did not play the single until the astronauts had safely returned to Earth. (Space Oddity)

On July 14 the movie Easy Rider with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper came to the cinemas with the title song “Born to be wild” by Steppenwolf. The motorcycles to be seen in the film were used police motorcycles which Peter Fonda had bought at an auction because Harley Davidson refused to make motorcycles available for the film.

On July 27, Pink Floyd’s “More” was released. It was the soundtrack for Barbet Schroeder’s film of the same name about the drug consumption of German youths in Ibiza. This was the first album without Syd Barrett (The Nile Somg / Ibiza Bar).

On August 3 Creedence Clearwater Revival released their third album “Green River”, which is ranked 95th of the 500 best albums ever by Rolling Stone magazine. (Bad Moon Rising / Lodi)

On August 30 Santana released their debut album. The sale of this new sound was fuelled by the much acclaimed performance two weeks earlier at the Woodstock Festival. (Evil Ways / Jingo)

On September 26 the last Beatles album recorded together was released: “Abbey Road”. The album “Let it be”, released in 1970 after the separation of the band, was already recorded in 1968. Abbey Road contains “Octopus Garden” which is the second Beatles song written by their drummer Ringo Starr. He wrote it in Sardinia when he was on the yacht of his friend Peter Sellers (“Pink Panther”). George Harrison wrote in Eric Clapton’s garden “Here comes the sun” as an expression of hope that the eternal business quirks with their record company would finally come to an end. (Octopus Garden / Here comes the sun)

On October 22 Led Zeppelin released their second album. This album started with “Whole Lotta Love”, which was always the last piece of their concerts from 1969 onwards and which was often extended to a medley. The guitar riffs of Jimmy Page are also formative in the song “Heartbreaker”. (Whole Lotta Love / Heartbreaker)

On October 25 Pink Floyd released the double album “Ummagamma”, which contained a live LP and a studio LP. The live tracks were recorded in Manchester and Birmingham. The studio album consisted of four parts in which each musician played his compositions without the participation of the others. (Astronomy Domine)

On November 29 the Rolling Stones released “Let it bleed”, one of their most successful albums ever. It was the last album with Brian Jones. Although no single was released, the album contains “Gimme Shelter”, one of their best songs. The London Bach Choir sang the intro in “You can’t always get what you want”. The cake on the iconic cover was made by the famous British TV cook Delia Smith. (Gimme Shelter / You can’t always get what you want)

In December 1969 B.B. Kind released the album “Completely Well” on which my favourite title “The thrill is gone” can be found (The thrill is gone).

Enjoy the playlist and dive back 50 years! Best regards, Adrian

(Good times, Bad times / Dazed and confused)

(Yellow Submarine / All you need is love)

Am 7. März erschien die erste LP von Genesis « From Genesis to revelation». When the sour turns to sweet / The serpent)

Am 7. April veröffentlichte der kanadische Songwriter Leonard Cohen sein zweites Album «Songs from a room». Darauf findet sich das Lied «Bird on a wire», mit welchem er all seine späteren Konzerte eröffnete. (Bird on a wire / Tonight will be fine).

Am 9. April erschien Bob Dylans Album «Nashville skyline».

Im April kamen zudem zwei Singles bekannter Musiker heraus: Elvis Presley’s «In the ghetto» und Simon & Garfunkels «The Boxer». (In the Ghetto / The Boxer)

(Space Oddity)

(Born to be wild)

(Octopus Garden / Here comes the sun)

Der Londoner Bach Chor sang das Intro zu «You can’t always get what you want». (Gimme Shelter / You can’t always get what you want)

The thrill is gone» findet (The thrill is gone)
